Berala is a predominantly residential area, with a commercial area near the railway station. Berala is bounded by Vaughan Street in the north, Woodburn Road, Kerrs Road, Brixton Road, London Road, Georges Avenue and Joseph Street in the east, Amy Street, Nottinghill Road, Kibo Road, Kingsland Road, Jenkins Street, Regents Street and Wrights Avenue in the south and Park Road, Mount Auburn Road and Graham Street in the west.
Berala is named from an Aboriginal word meaning musk-duck. Development of the area dates from the early 1800s. Growth was slow until the late 1800s, aided by the extension of the railway line in 1879. Expansion continued in the early 1900s. The most significant development occurred from the interwar period, especially during the 1940s and 1950s. The population has increased since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area. Major features of the area include Carnarvon Golf Club, Coleman Park and one school.
